Josephine Baker 1920s Jazz Age Tee
The History: Josephine Baker took Paris by storm in the 1920s, captivating audiences at the Folies Bergère and becoming one of Europe's most celebrated and highly paid entertainers. She broke racial barriers as the first Black woman to star in a major motion picture, the 1927 French silent film Siren of the Tropics. When World War II erupted, Baker put her fame and influence to extraordinary use. Working with French intelligence and the Resistance, she gathered information from Axis officials and carried secret military intelligence across borders, including messages written in invisible ink on her sheet music. For her wartime service, she received the French Croix de Guerre and other honors. A lifelong advocate for racial equality, Baker spoke at the historic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, alongside Martin Luther King Jr. Her remarkable legacy spans entertainment, wartime resistance, and civil rights activism.
Based on an authentic 1926 La Folie du Jour revue poster from the Folies Bergère, where Baker debuted her now-iconic banana dance, this design celebrates a barrier-breaking artist, Resistance intelligence operative, and civil rights pioneer who forged her own path through history.
