Sojourner Truth Tee
The History: Sojourner Truth spent her early life enslaved in New York before taking her freedom in 1826 and dedicating the rest of her life to transforming America. When her young son was illegally sold into slavery in Alabama, she took the slaveholder to court and won his freedom—becoming the first Black woman in American history to successfully sue a white man. In 1843, guided by deep spiritual conviction, she renamed herself Sojourner Truth to signify her mission: traveling the country to declare the truth about human equality. A fierce advocate for Black women's liberation, she delivered her famous "Ain't I a Woman?" speech at the 1851 Women's Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio, powerfully exposing the intersections of race and gender while demanding that the suffrage movement include all women. During the Civil War, she organized supplies for Black Union soldiers, met with President Abraham Lincoln at the White House, and continued demanding full citizenship and suffrage for all.
Featuring her portrait inside a classic star-studded patriotic crest, this design honors a true American hero who fought tirelessly to hold the nation accountable to its highest ideals.
